Favorite High School Memory:

I played the viola in a string quartet, which played for school "teas." I also remember a PE class where we practiced shooting green colored arrows into the lawn and could not leave until we retrieved the arrows.
On the downside, I remember a math teacher telling us that girls couldn't learn algebra. My mother got me into the University of Chicago College, provided that I took Algebra 2 in summer school after graduation. I took the course and passed.
I remember a boy called Bob McGee who remonstrated me for criticizing Anton Bruckner in a German class report. Bob, if you are out there, I married a guy who is a Bruckner fan and has played loud versions of Bruckner symphonies throughout our 43 year marriage.

What have you done since leaving high school?

I graduated from the University of Chicago College and the Master of Arts in Teaching program. I taught in a inner city high school while attending night law school at DePaul University. I graduated from DePaul University Law School, passed the Illinois Bar exam and tried cases for Legal Aid at Cook County Juvenile Court. I worked as a footnote editor at the University of Chicago Law and Economics Program while raising a daughter. I moved to Albuquerque in 1981 and worked at the University of New Mexico Law School Institute for Public Law. I got fired from my UNM job because I was a lousy proof-reader. I passed the New Mexico bar exam and started a legal research and writing business with my husband. We made the transition to computerized legal research which we provided for sole practitioner lawyers in New Mexico. I also wrote a number of appellate briefs for the New Mexico Court of Appeals, New Mexico Supreme Court and Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. Some were "ghost-writing" and some appeared under my "official" name, Clara Ann Bowler. My husband has retired, but I still work part time. I hope to finally retire in 2012 when I am 70.

Current Interests:

My current interests are gardening, visiting with my grandchildren and trying to get out of the legal writing business. I also write poetry when I wake up in the middle of the night with a draft legal brief in my head.

Middle Name or Initial:

"Clara Ann Bowler"

Most Memorable Experience Since High School:

Getting caught up in the University of Chicago culture. My mom made the right decision for my education.

One Thing I Have Done Since High School That Would Surprise My Classmates:

I finally realized that I couldn't play the viola very well and gave it up in middle age.
